Unani is a branch of study of traditional medicine used for healing and health maintenance observed in South Asia. Unani medicine was born in the doctrines of the ancient Greek physicians but was developed and refined by the Arabs through systematic experiments. Unani medicine is thus also known as Arabian medicine/ Islamic medicine, owing to the major contribution of the Middle East and South Asia. To pursue a career in Unani medicine, one has to complete a Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery, also known as BUMS.
BUMS like all other branches of alternative medicine, falls into the AYUSH category and is monitored by the Central Council of Indian Medicine. The Unani medicine course concentrates on several diverse treatment therapies in its field such as purging, Turkish bath, massage, diuresis, diet therapy, regimental therapy venesection, and use of herbal, animal and mineral drugs, exercise; and surgery.
Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Unani Medicine
Every course, especially medicine course has certain criteria that the candidates need to have while they are looking for admission to the prestigious colleges/universities. Unani medicine also has certain eligibility criteria, and they are as follows:
For Undergraduate:
- The candidate must complete their 10+2 in science stream (physics, chemistry, biology and English) from a well-recognized university.
- He/she should have a minimum aggregate of 50%.
- The candidate should be medically fit
For Post Graduation:
- The candidate must have MBBS Degree from a well-reputed college and university
- He/she should have a minimum aggregate of percentile. But the cut off marks can vary from college to college or university to university.
